Stages of Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Stages

Staging is generally done after the initial breast cancer diagnosis. It allows doctors to assess how far it has spread and to what extent, and helps them decide appropriate treatment methods.
 
 
 Here’s a quick guide to understand it:

STAGE 0

 <li class="stgsw-ls">Cancer only in ducts or lobules</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Not spread to surrounding tissue</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Non-invasive</li>
 </ul>

STAGE 01

<ul class="stsgw-lst">
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Invasive</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Present in normal breast tissue</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Two types Stage 1A – small tumour, not spread to lymph nodes</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Stage 1B – tumour in lymph nodes and possibly, breast tissue (less than 2cm)</li>
 </ul>

STAGE 02

<ul class="stsgw-lst">
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Invasive</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Two types Stage 2A – tumour may not be in breast, 2cm or smaller in breast, spread to at least 1-3 lymph nodes, 2-5 cm tumour in breast without lymph node spread</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Stage 2B – 2-5 cm tumour, spread to 1-3 lymph nodes, tumour larger than 5cm but not spread to lymph nodes</li>
 </ul>

STAGE 03

<ul class="stsgw-lst">
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Invasive</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">3 types Stage 3A – tumour may have spread to 4-9 lymph nodes, or larger than 5cm and spread only to 1-3 lymph nodes</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Stage 3B – tumour may be any size, disease spread to chest wall, may be present in up to9 lymph nodes, Inflammatory Breast Cancer considered 3B</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Stage 3B – any sized tumour with spread to 10 or more lymph nodes.</li>
 </ul>

STAGE 04

<ul class="stsgw-lst">
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Metastatic</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Any sized tumour, spread to other organs and tissues (bones, lungs, brain, liver, distant lymph nodes, chest wall)</li>
 <li class="stgsw-ls">Metastatic Breast Cancer 
 1) Advanced breast cancer/Stage 4 breast cance
 2) Spread from breasts to other areas of body (mostly bones, liver, lungs, brain)
 3) Cannot be cured, but treatments can improve life as long as possible.
